At SOCHH, we believe in the power of balance. In a world increasingly driven by technology, we’ve made a conscious decision to take a different path when it comes to the education of our youngest learners. While digital technology undoubtedly offers many benefits, we’ve chosen to prioritize a more traditional approach for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

In our kindergarten through fifth-grade classes, you won’t find iPads or Chromebooks. Instead, you’ll see students engaged in hands-on learning experiences, collaborative projects, and group discussions. Our curriculum is built on a foundation of directed instruction, peer-to-peer collaboration, and meaningful interactions with teachers and classmates.

Why do we eschew digital technology in our lower grades? It’s not about rejecting innovation; it’s about recognizing the value of traditional learning methods. By focusing on direct instruction, collaborative projects, and group discussions, we aim to cultivate critical thinking skills, creativity, and social-emotional development in our students. It increases student engagement, their problem solving skills and improves their overall recall and processing of the material.

At SOCHH, we believe in challenging our students academically while also allowing space for play and creativity. Our curriculum is designed to strike a balance between rigorous academic standards and opportunities for self-expression and exploration. Whether it’s solving math problems, writing an essay, or creating art projects, our students are encouraged to think critically, explore their interests, and express themselves creatively.

Play is not just a break from learning; it’s an integral part of the learning process itself. That’s why we prioritize play-based activities in our curriculum, even as students get older. From imaginative play in kindergarten to collaborative projects in fifth grade, play is woven into the fabric of our educational approach. Through play, students develop important skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience, setting a strong foundation for future academic success.

As students transition into middle school, they begin to integrate digital technology into their learning experience. Our middle school curriculum includes a combination of direct instruction, digital resources, and hands-on projects. While students have access to Chromebooks and our learning management system, the focus remains on meaningful interactions with teachers and peers, challenging academics, and opportunities for creative expression.

At SOCHH, our goal is to provide students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in high school and beyond. By balancing tradition and technology, challenging academics and creative expression, and structured learning and play, we strive to create an environment where every child can thrive. It’s a delicate balance, but one that we believe is essential for nurturing the hearts, minds, and hands of our students.
